Eco-responsibility at Massard: carbon footprint and concrete future actions

Industrial performance can no longer be conceived without control of its environmental impact. At Massard & Cie, this awareness has resulted in concrete commitments, ISO 14001 certification since 2012, and a continuous drive to limit the carbon footprint of production activities.

Discover the main pillars of our company's environmental approach, the actions already implemented, and the identified improvement perspectives, within an increasingly demanding context for the mechanical industry.

An environmental certification in place since 2012

Engaged in an environmental approach since the 2000s, the construction of the bar turning plant in Bas-en-Basset was naturally designed to integrate new technologies for reducing environmental impacts (building insulation, automated swarf evacuation and spinning chain, widespread use of containment systems, LED lighting, etc.).

Massard has been ISO 14001 certified for over 10 years, with an environmental management system integrated into its production processes.
The objective: to reduce the impact of industrial activities on the environment, while ensuring regulatory compliance and continuous improvement of environmental performance.

The organization has implemented:

A structured environmental policy

Monitoring indicators

Regular internal audits of practices

Controlling flows, recycling, and sorting

Several concrete actions are already operational in the Massard workshop. They primarily aim to limit waste, recycle consumables, and control industrial fluids.

Among the actions in place:

  • Recycling of used oils through filtration
  • Automated evacuation of swarf to the exterior
  • Filtration of burnt oil fumes
  • Settling and treatment of wastewater (with oil separator)
  • Selective sorting of paper, cardboard, batteries, ink cartridges, creation of bins...

A completed carbon footprint assessment

Massard has conducted a carbon footprint assessment of its activities, which constitutes a structuring step for establishing a continuous improvement roadmap.

Our carbon footprint assessment was conducted with the help of Corpokarma for the year 2023.

Which is equivalent to:

  • to the annual emissions of 168 French citizens;
  • to 222 car trips around the Earth;
  • 7,937 Paris / New York round trips by plane

Result: 479 kgCO2e / k€ of turnover or 67 tCO2e / FTE or 6.7tCO2e / working day

Once this diagnosis was established, several areas for progress were defined and integrated into the company's industrial strategy.

Planned investments: towards more sustainable production

In order to continue reducing its environmental footprint, Massard plans to invest in new equipment aimed at limiting energy loss and better recycling resources.

One of the key projects announced is the improvement of the oil filtration and cooling system on multi-spindle machines. Installation is planned for summer 2025.

This system will save approximately 1,000 liters of oil per year, reduce energy consumption related to cooling, and improve workshop cleanliness

Other avenues are under study:

  • Increasing the rate of recycled steel (EAF) in the mix of purchased materials
  • Progressive replacement of certain equipment with more energy-efficient models?
  • Improved energy management through new rooftop solar panels
  • Reducing pneumatic leaks to optimize compressor consumption

An integrated continuous improvement logic

Massard's environmental approach also relies on a collective dynamic: team involvement, operator awareness, and the integration of environmental criteria into purchasing, organization, or maintenance decisions.

This environmental approach complements an integrated management system, in connection with our ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environment) certifications and our commitment to the EN 9100 (aerospace) standard.

A solid eco-responsible approach

The eco-responsible approach undertaken by Massard is built on solid foundations: ISO 14001 certification, a structured policy, concrete actions already in place, and future investments.

But it is also designed as an industrial improvement lever, serving the overall performance of the company and the trust of its clients.
