The advantages of bar turning for the production of mechanical parts: Massard & Cie expertise

The production of mechanical parts for industry imposes increasing demands: tight tolerances, demanding materials, heat treatment, repeatability, optimized lead times. In this context, bar turning remains one of the most efficient machining technologies to meet these challenges.
At Massard & Cie, this expertise has been central to the business for over 70 years. Thanks to a comprehensive machine park and an industrial organization structured around quality, flexibility, and precision, the company supports its clients in the production of bar-turned parts based on drawings or standards, in small, medium, or large series.

Bar turning: an industrial process adapted to modern challenges

Bar turning: an industrial process adapted to modern challenges
Unlike other machining methods, bar turning enables continuous and stable production of parts of revolution, machined from bar stock, with an excellent level of dimensional regularity. This process, historically used for fasteners, has now evolved to cover increasingly complex parts, including for critical applications in the aerospace, energy, or medical fields.
Massard has several types of lathes:

  • Multi-spindle CNC lathes for large series,
  • Twin-spindle lathes for technical medium series,
  • Sliding headstock lathes enabling machining of parts up to 2800 mm long, making it a recognized specialist in long parts (more than 10 times the diameter).

Complete integration of the manufacturing process

Massard's strength lies in its ability to manage the entire value chain, from prototype to annual production with computer-aided stock management.
All parts produced are based on client drawings or current standards (NFE, DIN, ISO).

The company is organized around controlled production ranges:
• Small series: from 10 to 500 parts, produced on CNC machines
• Medium series: up to 5,000 parts on twin-spindle lathes
• Large series: up to 50,000 parts on multi-spindle machines

This modularity allows for responding to both one-off demands and a continuous production strategy. Buffer stock is ensured for recurring productions, with logistics managed by ERP.

Precision, stability, and length control

Machining of long and thin parts: Ø 2 mm to 200 mm mastered

Producing parts over 1000 or 2000 mm requires great rigor. The choice of the sliding headstock lathe allows for machining by maintaining the material in translation, ensuring optimal stability, even on small diameters.

Massard works on diameters ranging from Ø 2 mm to Ø 60 mm in bar stock, and up to Ø 200 mm in billet, covering a wide variety of components:

    • studs, tie rods, inserts, threaded rods, fittings,
    • metal fasteners, special screws, plugs,
    • parts for engines or mechanical assemblies.

A complete material offering, from standard to technical

One of Massard's differentiating elements is its mastery of multi-material machining. The company notably works with:

  • mild and pre-treated steels for classic fastening parts,
  • alloyed or special steels for complex mechanical functions,
  • standard stainless steels and special stainless steels (for aggressive environments),
  • copper-aluminum alloys and light alloys used in energy or aeronautics,
  • titanium, machined under strict conditions, particularly for medical or aeronautical uses,
  • as well as several technical polymers adapted to precision machining.

Each material imposes its cutting parameters, clamping conditions, and, if applicable, its heat or surface treatments. Massard also integrates or coordinates treatments such as quenching, tempering, nitriding, or coatings like zinc plating, nickel plating, anodizing.

Quality control: rigor, equipment, and certifications

Massard has been ISO 9001 certified since 1993 and ISO 14001 since 2014. The company is also engaged in an EN 9100 approach for aeronautical applications.

Quality control relies on:

A three-dimensional measuring station

for complex parts

Keyence cameras

for rapid optical sorting

SPC monitoring

with automated data acquisition during production

A documented and traceable organization

This system guarantees full compliance with client drawings and production repeatability, even over tens of thousands of parts.

Bar turning and associated services: much more than just machining

In addition to pure machining, Massard also integrates complementary high value-added services:

  • raw material supply management,
  • subcontracting of certified treatments,
  • assembly management for the delivery of assembled sub-components,
  • storage and scheduled delivery throughout the year.

These elements make Massard not just a subcontractor, but an industrial partner.

Industrial bar turning, as practiced by Massard & Cie, is much more than a technical process. It is a structured expertise, combining machine technicality, material knowledge, quality management, industrial logic, and series flexibility.

Thanks to its specialization in long parts, technical small and medium series, special fasteners, and complex threaded parts, Massard meets the expectations of very diverse sectors: automotive, energy, hydraulics, aeronautics, defense, pumps, and industrial equipment.
