Production of rolled threads: better mechanical strength for your fasteners

Precision in the service of performance

In the world of mechanical fastening, thread quality is a decisive criterion for ensuring the reliability, safety and durability of assemblies. At Massard, we have chosen to master in-house the production of rolled threads, a technology that offers considerable mechanical advantages compared with traditional machined threading.

Thread rolling: a cold-forming process

Unlike machining, which removes material, thread rolling is based on a cold-forming principle:
• The metal is pushed and compressed by profiled rollers, with no material removal.
• The metal grain flow is oriented and strengthened in the direction of the thread.
• The resulting surface is smoother and more uniform, reducing crack initiation sites.

Result: A Rolled Thread Exhibits Superior Mechanical Strength and Fatigue Resistance Compared to a Cut Thread.

Undeniable technical advantages

Choosing rolling provides several benefits for fasteners and mechanical parts:

Increased Strength: +30% on Average Compared to a Machined Thread

Improved Fatigue Resistance Thanks to the Continuous Grain Flow of the Metal.

Hardened and Polished Surface, Limiting Wear and Corrosion.

Optimized Productivity: Reduced Cycle Time and Improved Repeatability.

Material Savings: No Chips Generated, Thus a More Environmentally Friendly Process.

Applications at Massard

Our rolled threads are used in demanding sectors:

  • Automotive fasteners: screws, studs, threaded pins subjected to high loads.
  • Aerospace: critical parts where safety is paramount.
  • General mechanical engineering: assemblies requiring reliability and durability.

We produce right-hand or left-hand metric threads, UNC, UNF, BSW (specific only), in accordance with standards and customer specifications.

Integrated and certified know-how

At Massard, thread rolling is an integral part of our overall process:

  • Dedicated machine fleet to ensure a wide range of diameters and pitches.
  • Systematic dimensional and visual inspections to ensure compliance.
  • Integration into our ISO 9001 quality system and ISO 14001, a guarantee of rigor and traceability.

Rolled threads for safer assemblies

Thread rolling is not just a technique: it is a performance asset for our customers.
By choosing Massard, you benefit from fasteners and mechanical components that are stronger, more reliable and more durable, suited to the most demanding environments.

FAQ – Thread rolling and mechanical performance

What is the Difference Between a Rolled Thread and a Machined Thread?

Thread rolling cold-forms the material without removal, strengthening the metal grain flow. Machined threading, on the other hand, cuts the grain flow, which weakens strength and fatigue strength.

What Types of Materials Can Be Thread Rolled at Massard?

Massard masters rolling on standard steels, alloy steels, special stainless steels, copper alloys and titanium, adapting pressure and speed according to the material hardness.

How is the Quality of Rolled Threads Controlled?

Each batch is subject to dimensional measurements, visual inspections and mechanical strength tests. The results are integrated into our ISO 9001 quality system to ensure full traceability.
